St. Bernard's Pass

My name is Brandon Bernard. I'm a graphic designer, storyboard and layout artist, and writer. I was born and raised in Albuquerque, NM, and lived in Los Angeles for 12 years, then in Austin, TX, for about a year, and I'm now in Brooklyn, NY. This blog is a virtual scrapbook of things that inspire me. Unless otherwise specified, the work here is not mine. Anything else you'd like to know? Feel free to hit up my "ask" box!

She hung up and I set out the chess board. I filled a pipe, paraded the chessmen and inspected them for French shaves and loose buttons, and played a championship tournament game between Gortchakoff and Meninkin, seventy-two moves to a draw, a prize specimen of the irresistible force meeting the immovable object, a battle without armor, a war without blood, and as elaborate a waste of human intelligence as you could find anywhere outside an advertising agency.

I could write short stories for the rest of my life. Stories that are nice and sparse, that you can finish off as soon as you start them, you write them and read them without drawing breath, rounded and perfect like so many eggs, stories that if you add or remove a single word the whole thing goes to pieces.

Italo Calvino in a letter to Silvio Micheli (via swissserif)

I would be happy just to spend the rest of my days in pursuit of this ideal.

    (via swissserif-deactivated20140402)

It had the austere simplicity of fiction rather than the tangled woof of fact.

Raymond Chandler, The Big Sleep (via katyetc)

My face was stiff with thought, or with something that made my face stiff.
