St. Bernard's Pass

My name is Brandon Bernard. I'm a graphic designer, storyboard and layout artist, and writer. I was born and raised in Albuquerque, NM, and lived in Los Angeles for 12 years, then in Austin, TX, for about a year, and I'm now in Brooklyn, NY. This blog is a virtual scrapbook of things that inspire me. Unless otherwise specified, the work here is not mine. Anything else you'd like to know? Feel free to hit up my "ask" box!

    Veer Desktop Wallpapers

This is currently my desktop. I love this series of Veer wallpapers.

For the second year in a row now, I’ve decided to dispense with “New Year’s resolutions” (which are more famous for not being kept than for anything else), and instead aspire to a concept for the year. Last year’s theme was “Adventure,” and the early part of the year had me chronicling my experiences with adventure fiction, including Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which inspired me to design a fake dust-jacket, which in turn spawned an online store. I traveled for business for the first time in my life, including an excursion to Germany, my first overseas trip ever. I plunged into freelancing/unemployment, eventually landed a brand new shiny staff position at BLT, got a puppy, and re-booted this very blog, which had sputtered and failed a couple times before at other blog domains. Yes, 2010 was your regular out-of-control mine car, and I was Indiana Jones, clinging fiercely to my fedora.

This year’s theme, “Reinvention,” is actually my girlfriend’s suggestion. But I think it’s a suitable one because, like “Adventure,” it can mean so many different things. It’s what you make of it. I invite you to adopt the theme of Reinvention along with me this year. What will it do for you? Will you change your personal style? Habits? Conditioned responses to recurring stimuli? Give your workspace a long-overdo cleaning? Perhaps there’s a wheel lying around somewhere that needs reinventing. Don’t be shy, reinvent that sucker.

It’s Monday, seemingly the perfect time to start reinventing. It’s the beginning of the work week, and causes me stress. But I’ll try to view it as a blank slate, an opportunity to start fresh, without baggage. I hope you will, too.

I know it can be easy to forget resolutions, and that the old routine can settle in fast. So, at the risk of stepping on the toes of my two-thousandth follower, I’d like to offer you this iPhone wallpaper as a way of reminding yourself to be ever-changing in 2011. What will you reinvent?
